“Rough and Ready is the only mining town to have ‘seceded’ from the Union and then voted itself back in… It was decided in a town meeting in April 1850 to draw up articles of secession, forming the ‘Great Republic of Rough and Ready.’ Less than three months later, when preparing for an Independence Day celebration, community members realized that they were no longer entitled to celebrate US independence, and the secession was rescinded by popular vote.” —Wikipedia

“This reminds me of a thing I saw on tv, where you eat fruity pebbles and barf them on your partner’s chest during sex. They call it a cosby sweater!?!” —Someone I don’t know, commenting on a Facebook status

“IN THE early hours of the morning two men are robbed at gunpoint and ordered out of their Chevrolet Tahoe. The thief jumps in and roars off, but he does not get far. The vehicle is fitted with a telemetry system that provides a data link to a control centre. Soon after being reported stolen, the Tahoe is located by an operator who interrogates its satellite-navigation device. A signal is then sent to the engine-management system to prevent it restarting once stopped. Finally, once a police car has the Tahoe in view and the road ahead is clear, a second signal slows the engine down. The vehicle stops and the thief tries to run for it, but he is apprehended.” —The Economist

WHAT ARE THESE STRAWBERRIES DOING ON MY NIPPLES?: I NEED THEM FOR THE FRUIT SALAD! → amazon.com

I have absolutely no evidence to back up this claim, but I blame either 4chan or Something Awful for this book, all the reviews, and the fact that it’s one of the top suggestions in Google when you type “what”.

“Garfield’s greediness, laziness, and irresponsibility often get him into trouble, and he’s always quick to take the easy way out of a tough situation, even at others’ expense. He cons Odie into doing most of his work for him and takes advantage of the dog’s loyalty to him… Garfield is a model of irksome behavior, habitually shirking responsibility, abusing Odie’s loyalty, and stirring up enough trouble to keep his dim owner on his toes.” —I derive great pleasure out of this literal review of The Garfield Show for parents. “Imagine if Best Buy’s job was simply to make TVs maximally awesome, and their business model relied on salesmen telling customers what they need, with the costs then being paid by a third party who mostly bills the customer’s employer. How do you think the television market would change? ¶ That’s the health-care market, at least as currently composed.” —The Washington Post discusses one of many reasons I despise employer-based healthcare.

“…one time I went out to dinner with [Warren Buffet] at Gorat’s, and Marge Lauren, who is the widow of one of his earliest partners, came by and said hello. After she left the table, he said to me, ‘That woman is the reason I run Berkshire Hathaway the way I do, because her entire finances depend on me. Every dime she has is in Berkshire Hathaway stock.’” —From the Motley Fool’s Interview With Alice Schroeder, Warren Buffet’s biographer.
